Before setting up Arden Falconry, Danielle Shearsby and David Fielden had been working together for the last 12 years at Mary Arden’s House in Stratford upon Avon. Before that David had a proper job (his words) and Danielle was at MortonMorrellCollege studying Animal Care.
Arden Falconry set up their new home at the Jinney Ring 2 years ago and have been gradually building their business here. For those that know the Jinney Ring site - a small compound has been set up in the Orchard area by the bottom of the car park, this comprises of a cabin and 10 aviaries. The birds are flown in the field area for displays. The Falconers are running courses and educational sessions as well as holding flying demonstrations 2 or 3 times per day (11.30, 14:00, 15:30, weather permitting), They also offer school visits, falconry experience days, photography days and outside displays e.g. fetes, game fairs, birthday parties and evening talks.
The falconry is a lovely rural pursuit that fits well with the country setting of the site and blends into the Centre nicely.
In addition to visiting and observing the magnificent birds, you will be able to see equipment being made using many of the techniques and materials that have been used by falconers throughout the centuries.
At the moment Arden Falconry have 8 birds of prey, these are a European Eagle Owl, Bengal Eagle Owl, Kestrel Falcon, and a Harris Hawk, 2 Saker Falcons, a Peregrine cross Lanner Falcon and a Goshawk. They hope, as time goes by, they will be able to add to these birds by increasing the number of native species.
David and Danielle have had the opportunity to work with some of these birds and others on screen. Their European Eagle owl appeared on Disney time and one of the Saker Falcons is in a new adaptation of the French film “The Visitors” to name but some. They hope that in the future they may have the opportunity to once again see their birds on the screen.
They say “Our new home at the Jinney will allows us to grow, giving our birds purpose built aviaries and a large flying field without pylons or electricity wires. Our aim is to educate the public about the art of falconry, how these birds play a part in our environment, what we can do to help reduce the decline in the population of these magnificent birds but most importantly have fun in learning more about these birds”.
Arden Falconry run courses and experience days both at the Centre and off site - click here for more details
